Contents | The workshop is divided into theoretical lessons, of a general and monographic nature, and in an operational phase (design) that will be carried out individually by each student, also through laboratory activities and exercises. |
Textbook and course materials | A. Rossi, L’architettura della città, Marsilio, Padova 1966; |
Course objectives | The aim of the workshop is the acquisition by the student of the first theoretical foundations of the architectural discipline, of the concept of culture of living, of the city, of landscape and environment, of the fundamental forms of housing, also through analytical knowledge and reading criticism of exemplary works. The student also acquires the principles of composition and the cultural and technical tools for the organization and configuration of the architectural project applied to simple elements and single-family residences. |
Prerequisites | Knowledge of the fundamentals of descriptive geometry, design and assisted design. Historical knowledge with particular reference to the modern architecture season. |
Teaching methods | The course will be divided into lectures in which the theoretical aspects of the discipline will be addressed and in laboratory exercises where the students will work both in intermediate exercises and in the drafting of the project related to the theme of the year. Work is always individual. |
Evaluation methods | The verification of learning (achievement of the training objectives) will be done through the preliminary verification of the contents of a practical exercise, to be carried out individually in the classroom. The subsequent exam, at the end of the workshop, and with respect to which the exercise is preliminary, will instead consist of an oral interview and the subsequent discussion of the practical test (the project). The exercise, aimed at the greater understanding of the contents transmitted through the theoretical lessons, will consist in the redesign of modern single-family residences. The oral part of the final exam, instead, will concern both the contents transmitted through the theoretical lessons and some selected texts of the reference bibliography. Finally, the practical part of the exam will be verified both through the correspondence of the project to the required functional program, and through the evaluation of the student's ability to expose the contents of their project through a clear, concise and critically aware discourse transmitted during the workshop. |
Other information | During the lessons multimedia presentations will be used, the contents of which will then be made available to the students. |
Course Syllabus | The theoretical lessons will move from the analysis of the problems related to the discourse on the residence and the typology in the contemporary: in the whirling and automatic germination of images and messages that marks the acceleration of a process of continuous modification of the contemporary city, the essential function and more frequently implemented by the appearance of new types is that of the widespread use of consumer spaces within a production and random logic: the theme of the ephemeral overlaps with the request of the permanent in the sign of the renunciation of a precise identity. Therefore, themes such as the relationship between space and movement in the perception of contemporary architecture and the suspension of language are places of necessary reflection for a more sensitive attention to the appearance of new forms and new signs in the contemporary city: dense and congested, rarefied and diffused, drawn from history or rather mixed by the sticky glue of speculation, the city changes continuously to the point of confusing our gaze. The shape of the contemporary city, like that of the historical city, is no longer a direct vector of the values that characterize the civil life of the community. The city, however, in its variable changeability still continues to be made above all of houses; the residence with its themes has constantly drawn its face writing the history of urban development up to the very recent days. The architect, the new sorcerer's apprentice, experiments constantly different combinatorial formulas in the fallacious illusion of verifying in complexity that principle of analytic order by which the order of the addends does not change. Instead, the city rewrites itself, leaving the scene to the sole and absolute protagonist: the single or superimposed single-family residence (condominium) is the real "primadonna" of the contemporary urban recit; implacably indifferent to the context it interprets autonomously and in an unexpectedly flexible way the different needs of the new urban life; The typology and the forms of the house, alone, host and welcome different activities: residence, work, commerce, refreshment, entertainment, small productive activities. The house, in an involuntary and autonomous way, becomes the "litmus paper" of a new alchemical compound, a point-like element in the mesh of the new virtual and media network that runs through it. |
