Contents | Introduction - The triad material culture - artistic culture - historical culture and its role in the history of design: the historicization of sources in relation to the events of modern and contemporary. From the biographical method introduced by Pevsner in the Pioneers to the concept of 'mechanization' presented in Giedion's model of anonymous history: investigations on the debut of the History of Design up to the systematization of today's stories. |
Textbook and course materials | Matteo Vercelloni, Breve storia del design italiano, Roma, Carocci, 2008; |
Course objectives | The primary objective of the course is to reconstruct the evolutionary phases of the history of industrial design from the beginning of the 18th and 19th centuries up to the end of the 20th century, identifying the confluence of artistic culture, the world of industry and engineering, craftsmanship and design space. Fundamental in this direction is the historical reconnaissance up to the topicality of the significant moments in which the culture of design is measured with the research conducted in the field of architecture in relation to social changes and scientific experiments. This process will allow the student to acquire an adequate historical-critical ability in the reading of the main phenomena of design culture and to space with greater awareness in the fields of theoretical reflection. |
Prerequisites | Knowledge of the foundations of European and Global historical evolution. |
Teaching methods | Frontal lessons, projections of static visual contents and thematic meetings of comparison aimed at exercising the student's cognitive and expressive abilities. |
Evaluation methods | The verification of learning takes place through the preparation of a summary paper on the theme chosen by each student and the final exam, consisting of an oral test, which consists of an interview on the job of the year and a maximum of three open-ended questions on the topics of the course. In the evaluation in thirtieths, the results of the papers and the oral test have a weight of 20% and 80%, respectively, with the common goal of verifying the knowledge of general and particular issues, the historical-critical skills and the ability to synthesis. |
Other information | Inside of the course will start the educational project "From the hand to the robot cutter" with the collaboration of the Japanese artist Hirotsugo Aisu and the Association F2Lab. |
Course Syllabus | The course aims to reconstruct the evolutionary phases of the history of design, especially in Italy, in the twentieth century by identifying the confluence of artistic culture, the world of industry and engineering, craftsmanship and the space of the project. Fundamental in this direction is the historical reconnaissance of the significant moments in which the culture of design is measured with the research conducted in the field of architecture in relation to social changes and scientific experiments. This will make it possible to express and identify the qualities of the industrial products that surround us, from the useful object, to the pieces of furniture, from the means of transportation, to the technical object. |
